Ashley Nicole Johnson (she/her) is a communication scholar, public affairs expert, and lifelong fan of speculative fiction. She holds a Master’s in Communication Studies from Sacramento State, where her thesis explored how fandom cultures support identity formation and social well-being.
Ashley is the creator of Fandom Atlas, co-host of The TV Doctor’s podcast series on Star Trek: Discovery, and a passionate advocate for using pop culture as a bridge between education, mental health, and belonging.
Fandom Atlas started as my graduate thesis—and turned into a lifeline.
I created this project during one of the loneliest seasons of my life. Academic burnout and isolation had me feeling untethered. But the stories I loved—Star Wars, Marvel, Star Trek, Doctor Who—were still there, waiting for me.
In those fandoms, I found characters who struggled, grew, and connected. I began to study those stories through a scholarly lens, but I also held onto them like lifelines. Over time, my research evolved into something bigger: a workbook and curriculum to help others explore who they are and where they belong.
Fandom Atlas is the result of that journey. Whether you’re a student, a teacher, or just someone who loves stories—there’s a place for you here.
At Fandom Atlas, we believe:
